Manly Palmer Hall was born in Canada and came to prominence as an author, lecturer, and independent scholar of esoteric traditions. Working outside the formal academy, he devoted himself to assembling and interpreting the literature of Western symbolic philosophy — Freemasonry, astrology, and the mystery schools of antiquity. His interests ranged broadly across cultures and periods, drawing on source material that most readers had little practical access to. Over decades of writing and public speaking, he built a reputation as a tireless popular educator, a course that led directly to his most ambitious undertaking.

The Secret Teachings of All Ages, published in 1928, was an encyclopaedic survey of symbolic philosophy, drawing together myth, ritual, and doctrine from dozens of traditions into a single illustrated volume. Its scope — ranging from Freemasonry and astrology to the mystery religions of the ancient world — made it a sustained reference work for readers without access to specialist libraries or academic collections. Hall continued writing and lecturing at pace throughout his career, eventually producing over 150 volumes and delivering thousands of lectures, including two at Carnegie Hall.

In 1934 Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles, dedicating it to "Truth Seekers of All Time." The organisation brought together a research library, a lecture hall, and a publishing house under one roof, providing a permanent institutional home for his work. His books remain in print, and many of his recorded lectures are accessible online. The Philosophical Research Society continues to operate in Los Angeles, holding his archive and keeping his library and lecture output within reach.
