Joe Dispenza trained as a chiropractor, completing a Bachelor of Science at Evergreen State College before earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University. In 1986, a cycling accident left him with six broken vertebrae; he declined the recommended spinal surgery and instead used sustained mental visualisation to work towards his own recovery. That experience reoriented his thinking permanently, pointing him towards questions about the relationship between mind, body, and measurable physical change that would drive his subsequent research and writing.

Dispenza's central contribution has been to draw on neuroscience, epigenetics, and quantum physics to construct a working account of spontaneous remission — cases in which people recover from illness without conventional medical explanation. His books, including Evolve Your Brain, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, You Are the Placebo, and the New York Times bestseller Becoming Supernatural, work through this framework systematically. Beginning in 2012, he also began collecting data at his advanced workshops, producing a body of research into measurable physiological and psychological changes in participants practising his meditation techniques.

Dispenza continues to lecture and run multi-day residential retreats globally, alongside corporate consultancy work. His foundational teachings are available through a Progressive Online Course, and his books remain widely read across the fields his work addresses. The research strand initiated at the 2012 workshops is ongoing, with data gathered from retreat participants used to support and refine his published findings. His work sits at the intersection of self-directed healing and mainstream scientific literature on neuroplasticity and epigenetics — a position he has occupied and continued to develop for more than two decades.
