Helen Schucman was working as a psychology professor when, in 1965, she began taking down what she described as an inner dictation from a voice that identified itself as Jesus Christ. The transcription continued over seven years and concluded in 1972. Nothing in her professional background had prepared her for such a project, and for some time after its completion she kept her identity as its author entirely private. What she recorded would become one of the most widely read channelled works of the twentieth century.
A Course in Miracles presents miracles as naturally occurring expressions of love rather than supernatural departures from the ordinary. Its language draws from Christianity, yet the work frames itself as a perennial philosophy — accessible beyond any single tradition and presented in terms relevant to present times. The curriculum operates as a self-study programme; a separate supplement incorporates songs, prayers, and psychotherapy material. The Foundation for Inner Peace, which holds the authorised publishing rights, describes the Course's purpose as leading students to an understanding of their oneness with God and love.
Schucman's authorship was withheld for years following the work's completion. The Foundation for Inner Peace holds the authorised publishing rights — the only complete edition, sanctioned by Schucman as its scribe — and has since sponsored its translation into 27 languages. The work now circulates in independent study groups and reading communities across many countries. As one of the most-read channelled texts of the twentieth century, A Course in Miracles continues to be used as a structured, practical self-study resource.
