Born 1963 in New York City. Degrees in physics and computer science, then a long career at the intersection of cryptography, policy, and practice. Designed the Blowfish and Twofish ciphers. Wrote Applied Cryptography (1996), which was, for a decade, how cryptographers learned cryptography.

Has fellowships at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Berkman Klein Center. Serves on the boards of EFF and Access Now. Has been called the world's most respected security technologist by The Economist — a label he has done nothing to undermine.

His blog, Schneier on Security, has been running since 2004. His books — Secrets and Lies, Beyond Fear, Data and Goliath, Click Here to Kill Everybody — are required reading for anyone who cares how digital systems actually fail. The voice is patient, precise, and unintimidated by power.
