The bottleneck in biology is no longer experimental — it is coordination. Funding cycles take years; peer review is unpaid; intellectual property is locked behind university tech transfer offices that rarely get it to market. We propose a token-governed treasury that funds longevity research directly, holds the resulting IP as on-chain primitives, and lets the patient capital of a thousand small wallets coordinate on a single autophagy lab without a fund structure.VitaDAO founding materials →
DeSci is the bet that scientific funding, IP, and replication can be coordinated by tokens better than by NIH grant cycles. Tyler Golato and Paul Kohlhaas spun out Molecule in 2019 as the IP-NFT platform — a way to fractionalize ownership of early-stage research. VitaDAO, formed 2021 with Vitalik Buterin and others backing it, was the first BioDAO: a token-governed treasury that funds longevity research and holds IP-NFTs for the projects it sponsors. ResearchHub (Patrick Brown's project, funded by Brian Armstrong) tokenized peer review with RSC.
BIO Protocol launched in 2024 as the meta-platform — a launchpad for BioDAOs with curated reputation, tokenized treasuries, and a shared governance layer across VitaDAO, AthenaDAO (women's health), HairDAO (hair loss), CerebrumDAO (neurodegenerative), and others. The thesis is that disease-area-specific DAOs aggregate patient communities, deploy capital faster than pharma, and own the resulting IP through IP-NFTs that route royalties back to token holders. It is biotech venture restructured around community ownership.
Pump.science is the most cracked DeSci experiment of 2024 — a livestream of actual longevity compounds being tested on C. elegans and mice, with bonding-curve tokens for each compound that pay holders if the molecule extends lifespan. Rifampicin, urolithin, and others have run live. It is either the future of pre-clinical research or a casino with worms — and the people running it (the Molecule and Pump teams) are open that they are figuring it out in public. The cultural posture is anti-pharma, pro-longevity, pro-radical-coordination, and slightly too much for a normie biotech investor. Which is the point.
The founding document.
Six pieces of the DeSci stack.
DeSci's wager: science's funding model (grants), publishing model (Elsevier), and IP model (university tech transfer) are all roughly fifty years out of date. Crypto can rebuild each layer with permissionless funding, on-chain IP rights, and live-experiment transparency. Molecule built IP-NFTs. BIO Protocol made bio-DAOs liquid. Pump.science put live longevity experiments on-stream. Six pieces of how the stack actually composes.
Paul Kohlhaas's Molecule wrapped university research IP into NFTs that confer legal rights — licensing revenue, governance over commercialization decisions, and underlying patent ownership. The IP-NFT is a legal contract template plus a token; the token's holder is the legal counterparty. VitaDAO and other bio-DAOs use IP-NFTs to fund and own research portfolios. The mechanism turned 'invest in early-stage drug discovery' from a venture-only activity into something a community of 1,000 patient capital allocators could do without a fund structure.
BIO Protocol (incubated by Molecule, token launched 2024) is a launchpad for bio-DAOs. Each DAO funds a specific research domain — VitaDAO (longevity), HairDAO (hair loss), AthenaDAO (women's health), CryoDAO (cryopreservation) — and BIO holders curate which DAOs get listed and seeded. The unlock: a coherent meta-layer where bio-DAOs share liquidity, tokenomics templates, and IP-NFT infrastructure. Without BIO, each bio-DAO had to bootstrap independently. Backed by Vitalik Buterin and the broader DeSci coalition. The clearest infrastructure play in the sector.
Pump.science streams live longevity experiments on C. elegans (nematodes) to a public audience. Compounds — rifampicin, urolithin A, others — are dosed against control populations, and survival data updates publicly in real time. Each compound has a token; markets price the probability of lifespan extension as the experiment runs. The radical move is making the data primary and the discussion downstream of the data, instead of the other way around. A small experimental sample size in a popcorn format, but the rails are correct.
VitaDAO (2021, founded by Tyler Golato, Paul Kohlhaas, Vincent Weisser) is the longest-running bio-DAO. VITA token holders govern a treasury that funds longevity research projects — specific researchers, specific compounds, specific aging hypotheses. Funded research includes work on Korolchuk lab autophagy, Newcastle University proteostasis, and others. IP-NFTs flow into the DAO's portfolio. ~$10M+ deployed into research grants over its run. The reference example for what a bio-DAO actually looks like once it's been operating for years rather than weeks.
Brian Armstrong's ResearchHub pays RSC (ResearchCoin) for substantive peer review, replication, and publication of open-access papers. The pitch: scientific peer review is unpaid labor that gates the largest gatekept industry on Earth — pricing it changes the incentive landscape. Bounties on specific papers, on specific reviews, and on replication studies. Volume small relative to legacy publishing; signal real on the contributors who showed up. The bet is patient — it competes with a 350-year-old institution's habits.
Decentralized clinical trials use crypto rails for patient consent (on-chain attestation), data integrity (cryptographic timestamping of trial results), and direct patient-to-protocol payment for participation. Several bio-DAOs have piloted small-scale decentralized trials for nutraceutical and longevity compounds where the regulatory bar is lower than Phase II oncology. The full vision — community-funded, on-chain-coordinated FDA-grade trials — is years out and requires regulatory frameworks that don't yet exist. The early experiments are useful as training data for what does.
Projects we actually watch.
Conviction is stated as conviction; you decide what to do with it. Tiers below — Core, Conviction, Watch, Speculative — reflect how much of FRQNCY's attention each project currently earns, not a recommendation to buy.
Five small things, repeated.
Conviction is theatre without practice. Five steps that turn the thesis above into something the body actually does, not just something the mind agrees with.
VITA, ATH, HAIR. Read the project updates. Notice what real research timelines look like.
Read the funding memo, evaluate the science, vote your tokens. You are now a longevity grant committee.
Read the protocol, watch the C. elegans data, hold to the readout. The science is the chart.
Earn RSC for substantive review. The incentive layer is the experiment.
Smart-contract IP licensing for biotech. The legal scaffolding is the unlock.
Two doors. Pick one.
